Over the past few weeks I've been shooting a feature film in Liverpool. Kelly & Victor, adapted from the book by Niall Griffiths is directed by Kieran Evans and produced by Janine Marmot [Bodysong, No Greater Love] and Andrew Freedman [His and Hers]. It stars Julian Morris [24, ER] and Antonia Campbell Hughes [The Other Side of Sleep, Lead Balloon]. We're shooting on the Arri Alexa with Zeiss SuperSpeeds.

Two shorts that I shot are showing at the Galway Film Fleadh this week. Still Early, directed by Ger Leonard is showing in the Town Hall on Firday 8th at 10pm, as part of the New Irish Shorts: Drama Programme 3. Downpour, directed by Claire Dix, is showing as part of New Irish Shorts: Drama Programme 7, which is also on in the Town Hall, on Saturday at 2.30pm. The festival is always good fun, so hopefully see some of you down there.

Shot in half a day in a small club in Dublin, with a large group of kids. Bit hectic, but we managed it in the end! Shot on Red with Nikons. Lighting was mostly small tungsten lamps and plenty of smoke.

'Calling' the Shots

Here's a little video I made for the Nokia N8 Producers Competition.

Shot entirely on a Nokia N8, mostly with an 1950s Bolex lens taped to the front.

Shooting on a phone provided some interesting challenges and solutions. To keep control of the focus and exposure (both automatic on the N8) I decided to think small and use the old lens for some extreme macro. Usually marco will give you a nice close up of something the size of a golf ball, say. With the lens I used, the marco turned out to be even closer. As you can see in the film, the frame could only really accomodate something the size of a pea.

The Cast/Prop Dept.

To tell this miniature story, I had to run round the house and find as many tiny things as possible. What I ended up with was mostly a selection of toys, magazine cutouts and foodstuffs. So the (basic) storyline developed around these items. Extra things, such as a miniature passport and postcards, had be created in Photoshop and printed out at a tiny scale. Because the macro left no room to focus, for close ups of things like the passport I had to make bigger versions. Kinda the reverse of what they had to do in the early days of cinema, before macro (they would create giant versions of objects, such as a keyhole to imitate a macro shot).

For the point of view of the mouse, I used the phone without the lens and stuck it to the end of a piece of wood. This is where the value of shooting on something as small as a phone really showed. I could get the camera almost level with the floor and run around the house. Because the lens is quite wide angle, it could believably be a mouse's point of view. The phone also allowed long duration shots, which proved very useful. In fact, I shot the entire film without having to 'unload' the phone, and I think there was still hours of space available.

The stars Valene Kane (The Fading Light) and Ben Peel (Hunger). We shot over three days in a house on North Great George's street, mostly using natural light. Camera was Red with standard speed Zeiss lenses.

'Primary School Musical' - Screen Grabs

Over the next month or so I'm going to be working on a RTE children's show for GMarsh production in Co.Mayo, 'Primary School Musical'. Most of the content is shot on a Z1 and EX3, but I'm providing some stylised links and at some point I will most likely be shooting some music videos with the kids. A project I shot for French artist Aurélien Froment is now screening at the Motive Gallery in Amsterdam. It will be showing until the 5th November. It will also be showing at the Ambika P3 Gallery in London (14-16th October), and the Cour Careé de Louvre gallery in Paris (20-24th October).

The exhibition also features two other video pieces by the artist, all extremely interesting work, and highly recommended.

On the shoot I had the pleasure of working with Nico Vermuelen, a cinematographer who has worked with some of the greatest directors and lighting cameramen in cinema.

'Rickshaw Rick' Teaser

Here is a teaser for a film I shot earlier this year. It was directed by Robert Manson, and produced by Ruairi McKenna for our company Annville Films.

It stars Martin McCann (The Pacific, Killing Bono) and Karen Sheridan. We shot it on a 7D with some pick ups on a 5D, pushing the low light capabilities and making the most of the camera's size (at one point we shot in the heart of a nightclub, amongst hundreds of drunken revellers).

Hunter Gatherer - 'Cloud'

Here is the video I shot for Hunter Gatherer's 'Cloud'. This won 'Best Cinematography' at the Bray Music Video Festival. It was directed and produced by Roisin McNamee and Ciara Kennedy. Vincent Gallagher was the gaffer and Stephen Fuller was the camera assistant.

The video was shot on the Red with two vintage Nikon lenses and the lighting package consisted of two lights - a 2.5k HMI and a 1K par can.

I'm delighted to have won two awards at the Bray Music Video Awards last week. I received 'Best Shot' for my work on Hunter Gatherer's 'Cloud', and I also managed to win the 'Rising Star' award, for my cinematography across the videos I worked on. I'm over the moon :)

This weekend I had fun on a runway shooting a video for 'Love Sounds' by Miracle Bell. Simon Eustace, who recently one Best Director and Best Video at the Bray Music Video Festival was the director.

The whole thing was shot from a trailer being towed down a runway. We were blessed with lovely weather and a very enthusiastic band. Shout out to my fantastic assistant, Manu.

No Soul For Sale

If you happen to be near the Tate Modern over the weekend, I recommend dropping in and checking out the No Soul For Sale festival. Bringing together art collectives from around the world, it also happens to feature a piece I shot for Susan Thomson, 'Fire Practice Theatre'. Susan's piece is showing as part of the thisisnotashop exhibit 'Everything is Up', which also includes work by a number of other Irish artists.

It sounds like a great exhibition, well worth a look if you happen to be in London.

Music Video Festivities

The Bray Music Video Festival back, and this year three videos I shot- including one I directed- will be screening at it. This time it takes place in the Harbour Bar, which should be lots of fun and nice and casual. So if you fancy having a few drinks and checking out a load of music videos do drop by. There is also live music on every night.

The festival runs from tomorrow evening (Thursday) till Sunday evening. I have videos showing in the screenings tomorrow at 19.30, Friday at 19.00 and Saturday at 17.30.

Zsigmond shoots Red

It's already been used by Chivo, and now here's a shot of veteran DP Vilmos Zsigmond (McCabe & Mrs Miller, The Deer Hunter, Close Encounters) shooting on a Red, on the set of the Hungarian film 'The Maiden Danced to Death'. Nice to see how valid the camera has become after just two years in the market.

'Liliquoi Blue: God Made Me a Boy' Exhibition Opening

An installation piece that I shot with the artist Qasim Riza Shaheen is showing at the new CityArts gallery (off Bachelor's Walk, between the Ha'Penny and O'Connell street bridges) from this Thursday 22nd April till Friday 21st May. Shot on the Red, the footage will be projected in full HD on a very nice projector. And apart from the technical side of things, it's a really strong work of art/documentary, so I highly recommend it.

'Prodigal Son' Screen Grabs

Just finished another short, 'Prodigal Son' written and directed by Colin Scuffins. It's a futuristic western, so there was a lot of room for stylised shots - plenty of tracking and even a touch of noir lighting - lots of fun for me! Here are some grabs anyway...

Shot on Red, with Nikons (mainly a 24mm). Lighting-wise I had a fairly modest package of a Joker800, four 1k pars and three single tube kinos. The Joker came in particularly handy.

The extensive and talented cast included Sean Conroy, Jill Kavanagh, Clara Kavanagh, Ryan Andrews, Ray Kinsella. The producer was Eilis Mernagh, and Marie Caffery was production manager. We shot over four days in various locations around Dublin/Ashtown.

Much kudos goes to my various assistants throughout the shoot: Mark, Niall, Padraig, Neil, plus the excellent Daniel Doyle, who headed up the grip department. The film will go into post production soon.

'Moon Rooster' Screen Grabs

Here are some screen grabs from a films I shot over the last couple of days. Filmed entirely on location in Tulsk, co. Roscommon. Directed by Niall Sheerin, 'Moon Roster' is the story of a social outcast that discovers that he just needs to be himself, however bizarre his true self is. More pics after the jump...

This one was shot on Nikons again. Three lenses - 35, 55 and 85mm. Lighting package was two tungsten 1k pars, three Redheads and a good few practical bulbs. Shot in 4K RAW, on the Red.

Written and directed by Niall Sheerin. The very talented lead actor is Kevin Beirne. I'll post a link to a extract when it's up.
